Register now for the November 13, 2017 CNY Expo!

The Central New York Engineering Expo (CNY Expo) is a daylong symposium featuring a variety of technical presentations. Each of the sessions offers continuing education credits for NYS-licensed professional engineers, and features discussions on current technical standards, new technologies, and unique projects by talented professionals. The event is open to the public, is a great venue for networking, and has attracted thousands of attendees across the Northeast.

It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the 2016-2017 ASHRAE year and judging from your comments, it’s been a successful several months. As a Chapter, we’ve enjoyed tours of the Carrier Dome and new OCM BOCES Liverpool facility, held three Young Engineers of America events at the 315 Brewery in Camillus, a bowling outing at Revolutions and most recently a Syracuse University basketball game in the graciously donated Carrier Box as well as a successful transition to the Dinosaur BBQ location for our monthly Program Meetings. Additionally our Student Activities program is running on all cylinders as they prepare to launch ASHRAE’s first ever SmartStart Weekend April 1-2 at the Syracuse University Center of Excellence. Past Society President David Underwood has committed to attend and speak at the event as we aim to recruit the next generation of HVAC/R engineers. I’m confident you’ll find the second half of the year equally engaging and encourage you to participate in the coming events.

Please take note of the upcoming “ASHRAE Learning Institute 2017 Online Course Series” offering courses throughout 2017. One and Two Part courses are available and include such topics as The Commissioning Process in New and Existing Buildings and Standard 90.1 – 2016 HVAC / Mechanical Design. Additional information will be available in our newsletter, which will be posted soon.

In closing, our February 8th Evening Program Meeting is proving to be a topic of interest as Rick Siberine of Nupi Americas presents “Polypropylene PP-R and PP-RCT Pressure Pipe & Fitting Solutions”. Plastic piping is gaining acceptance as an alternative solution to traditional copper, steel and iron pipe system designs and this presentation offers 1-PDH credit. Please plan to join us in the Main Room upstairs at the Dinosaur BBQ and come early for the ever popular Social Happy Hour where drinks are on the house from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The CNY ASHRAE Chapter's 2016-2017 Kick-Off Meeting at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome was a huge success. We were treated to a behind the scenes look at key HVAC/R mechanical equipment as well as Media and Locker Room facilities.

The group tour consisted of 57 participants, our largest Program event in recent years, with Syracuse University staff and Student Chapter ASHRAE members joining us for the event. Members from the Niagara ASHRAE Chapter joined us as well and the tour concluded with a visit to the 50-yard line and dinner at the famed Club 44.

A special note of thanks to Peter Sala and Ray Kowalski of Syracuse University for their tireless efforts in helping to make this event one to remember.

Please watch the calendar for upcoming programs and events and we look forward to your continued interest and support.

Welcome to the 2016-2017 Central New York ASHRAE Chapter year.

We have an exciting season planned, from informative technical programs to tours and a brand new meeting location.  We’re confident with your continued participation and support, coupled with your Chapter Officers and Board of Governors hard work, we’ll enjoy another successful year.

We’re excited to announce monthly meetings will now be held at the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.  This well known venue is sure to provide a great social meeting place as well as host for our technical program schedule.  We’ve reserved the upstairs Willow Room for 7 of our 9 monthly programs this year and look forward to seeing you there.

This year’s technical program schedule will be posted shortly and we kick the year off right on Wednesday, September 14th with a tour of the Carrier Dome.  This may be your last chance to see the equipment used to pressurize the dome roof and condition the building before the dome is switched to a hard roof in the coming year.  Immediately following the tour, dinner will be held at the prestigious 44 Club.  Please see our website for details and register early for this event as interest is high and we have a limited number of attendee spaces.

On behalf of the entire Chapter, please join me in thanking Past-President Richard Kimball and last year’s Board for their hard work and dedication.  Under Richard’s term, we surpassed our Research Promotion goal and made a significant Community Enrichment donation to OCM BOCES HVAC/R Technician program, all on the heels of a very successful CRC event hosted in Syracuse.

More exciting news will follow and I look forward to meeting each of you at upcoming events.

    Kindest regards,

    Mark Yonnick, Chapter President

NY-GEO – the NY Geothermal Energy Organization, is a non- profit corporation that was formed in July of 2014 to represent installers, designers, drillers, engineers, consultants and other geothermal industry participants.  Before NY-GEO, the industry had been holding annual conferences primarily directed at contractors.  This year NY-GEO is expanding the conference to include designers, engineers and those responsible for NY’s buildings – architects, developers and state and local agencies as well as private organizations that provide housing and commercial space.

This year our annual conference will be held March 17th and 18th at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.  Skidmore provides a great environment in that many of their buildings are heated and cooled geothermally, and they plan for 50% of their campus to be geothermal by 2020.

The two day conference will include sessions with PE PDH credits for those engineers who may be interested.  The attached flyer provides some basic information and a link to the conference website.
