As our Chapter monthly meetings in ASHRAE 2018-2019 year draws to an end, I want to take the opportunity to thank all my Chapter board of governors for their contributions to our programs this year, from Empire Brewery Tour and SUNY ESF Gateway Building Tour to our monthly meetings with various topics in Dinosaur BBQ. I also want to thank these meeting attendees (Chapter members and students and guests) and speakers/reception sponsors for their participation to bring local Chapter members together regularly. Most of all, I want to thank all the Chapter members for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Chapter President in the year of 2018-2019!

To summarize our Chapter progress so far, we have several key initiatives taken place throughout the year, including first-time SU senior project sponsorship, NYS Green Building Conference sponsorship, starting a SUNY ESF student branch, and Chapter Sustainability Project at Oswego County Opportunities’ Transitional Living Home in Fulton. As well as our regular events, including CNY Steamboat Challenge, CNY Engineering Expo sponsorship, Chapter scholarship, Past Presidents’ Night, YEA events, Student Activities Nights, and many other Chapter traditional programs. However, we have more to come this May and this summer: we will install new board of governors and roll out our first ASHRAE CNY Chapter Hall of Fame awards, and of course our annual Clambake and Golf Tournament. As you all know, due to the close of hinerwadels, our Chapter has been working hard to ensure another successful year at the Spinning Wheel this June.

In April, we welcomed the five senior students and their advisor from SU Mechanical Engineering program in our monthly meeting. After two semesters’ working with volunteers from our board of governors, the students presented their senior project to our local members. The students gained the first-hand experience in HVAC design and construction with local engineers and manufacturer representatives. Our board hope to continue to efforts next year.

On April 17 and 18, NYS Green Building Conference was taking place at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Syracuse.  Our Chapter sponsored the conference and several volunteers were at the conference to introduce ASHRAE and its technical resources to conference participants.

Our Chapter Sustainability Project at Oswego County Opportunities’ Transitional Living Home in Fulton has good progress last month as well. The new furnace was installed and installation of the new LED lighting fixtures is ongoing. Please refer to Charlie’s April newsletter article for detail progresses of the project.

This spring, I also attended ASHRAE SSPC 90.1 committee meetings in ASHRAE headquarter in Atlanta. As the 3rd year serving on the committee, I get to know more of the incredible technical resources ASHRAE offers besides all the administrative efforts from Society, Region, and our Chapters. As I will join the honorable group of Chapter past presidents this fall, I sincerely encourage all the local members to contribute to ASHRAE technical committees.

Also my term as ASHRAE Region I RVC YEA coming to an end, I want to remind all the Chapter YEAs again that “you belong here” – if you are in the HVAC/R industry, you belong here! I sincerely hope you all can learn both technical knowledge and the other soft skills from the ASHRAE family to enhance your career and life, I hope to see you in future ASHRAE meetings!

Finally, I am looking forward to seeing you all in our May Meeting, where we will have Chuck Gulledge, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and future Society President present on a topic of Design-Build-Operate-Maintain, as well as the Region I DRC Chris Phelan’s chapter visit and our new Board of Governors installation and our Chapter awards. Don’t miss it!

Sincerely,

CL
