As winter is gone and spring comes to CNY, our ASHRAE CNY Chapter monthly programs are also drawing to an end. Please join us for our last two meetings of the 2018-19 year in April or May.

March has been a busy month for the Chapter. First, we had a lot to cover in our March meeting on March 13th. Our Chapter thank FW Webb for their sponsorship for the reception hour before the main program! Daryl Schoellkopf with FW Webb also gave an in-depth presentation on Steam Trap Sizing and Selection Guideline. It was very well received by industry engineers and students from SUNY Canton and OCM BOCES, we were glad to have the students and their advisors joining us for the meeting.

We also dedicated our March meeting to our Chapter past presidents, several of them joined us. We sincerely thank them for their leadership for our local Chapter in the past and their continuous contribution to our current Chapter board! We were also honored to recognized the following two individuals: current Chapter Historian Bill and Garrett.

We were glad to present this our own Chapter Scholarship to Garrett and his family. This Soceity’s Chapter Scholarship is available to a qualified undergraduate mechanical or architectural engineering student or engineering technology student enrolled full-time at a post-secondary educational institution within the geographic boundaries of the Central New York Chapter. More information about the ASHRAE Society’s Central New York Chapter King-Traugott Scholarship can be found here: https://www.ashrae.org/communities/student-zone/scholarships-and-grants/ashrae-society-chapter-scholarships

Garrett Fields from SUNY Canton won the Society’s Central New York Chapter King-Traugott Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year in the amount of $3,000.

William Walter, Chapter Historian (retired from Carrier), will be honored with the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award at the Society’s Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

We are also pleased to have our Chapter Hospitality Chair Robert attending the YEA Leadership Weekend 1.0 in Portland, Oregon in mid March with a scholarship from ASHRAE Region I. Please refer to his article for his experience from the weekend, and we encourage more local YEA members to take advantage of the scholarship and training opportunities ASHRAE provided. More information about ASHRAE YEA Leadership Weekend can be found here: https://www.ashrae.org/communities/young-engineers-in-ashrae-yea/yea-events-and-programs/yea-leadership-weekend

Our Chapter Sustainability Project at the Oswego County Opportunities’ Transitional Living Home om Fulton has significant progress the past few months. The new furnace has been installed with the support from our Chapter volunteers led by Charlie and other contractors. The newly installed furnace in the basement serves the first floor, and the new LED lighting fixtures are expected to be installed in the next month or so. Please refer to Charlie’s article for the progress of the Project.

To support local conferences and organizations, our Chapter sponsored $1,000 (Bronze Sponsorship) for the New York State Green Building Conference organized by SUNY ESF. We will have a table during the conference in Syracuse on April 17 and 18, please stop by if you are attending the conference.

Our Chapter sponsored Senior Project at Syracuse University has been going well, and it almost draws the final phase of the project. The board members are excited to hear from these SU senior students about their project and lessons learned before their final exam this spring semester.

Also join me to welcome our new members this month, we look forward to seeing you in our April or May meetings or summer events. Please refer to our Membership Promotion Chair Derek’s article for details.

    Mr. Raymond A Hickey

    Mr. Nitish Suresh

As spring is here, our annual Clambake and Golf Tournament is under way, the registration will be open soon. Please remember that out Annual Clambake is at the Spinning Wheel in North Syracuse. We are looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces there! If your company plan to sponsor, please contact Steve or Tim for details, we appreciate your continuous support in advance! Please refer to the attached flyer for details.

Finally, as ASHRAE Regional Vice Chair for YEA, I had the pleasure to visit and speak in Boston Chapter. As the largest Chapter in our Region, Boston Chapter is well organized and has great attendance in their monthly meetings (with their unique programs and scholarships as well). It was about 100 people during March meeting – excellent attendance and worth all other chapters in the Region to learn from. This is my last Chapter visit as Region I RVC YEA, I encourage all Young Engineers in ASHRAE to get actively involved in Chapter and Region and Society levels, because I believe you belong here and ASHRAE provides excellent learning opportunities for your career and life!

Please take the opportunity to look at our Chapter 2019-2020 Board of Governors. Hope to see you in our April meeting in Dinosaur BBQ!

    Sincerely,

    CL

    President’s Message

On January 9, we started our first Chapter meeting in 2019 with Richard Martin with Carrier on air handling units. Thanks to the general sponsorship from Carrier every year, this meeting was made free to all attendees. Despite the winter weather in Syracuse, we had a very good turnout!

Figure 1. CNY Chapter January Meeting.

ASHRAE 2019 Winter Conference and AHR Expo were held in Atlanta, GA from January 12th to 16th. Most of the meetings were held at Omni Hotel downtown, connected to the CNN Center and right across the street from Centennial Olympic Park. I had the opportunity being there attending Society YEA committee meeting and other committee meetings. I was very glad running into several of our local members and some YEAs from Region I.

Figure 2. ASHRAE YEA Committee 2018-2019, Atlanta, GA.

Due to heavy snow, our Chapter had to reschedule our February meeting to February 20. Though there was an SU men’s basketball that day, we still had about 25 people attended. It was presented by another speaker from Carrier, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Brian Monk on IAQ and Cognitive Functioning in High Performing Buildings. Several people brought up quite a few questions after the presentation, and the speaker provided insightful knowledge on ventilation and IAQ.

On Wednesday, March 27, we had our Chapter YEA bowling event. Due to heavy snow, we had six people showed up. Our Chapter would like to see more people attending in our future YEA events.

Figure 3. CNY Chapter YEA bowling event.

We also had two local students won ASHRAE scholarships, one of which is Central New York Chapter King-Traugott Scholarship – this is our own scholarship which is managed by ASHRAE society, we encourage all local college students to apply. We hope both Garrett and Thomas can join us in our March meeting. Additionally, our own Historian Bill will be honored with the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award at the Society’s Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri this June! Congrats, Bill!

    • ·         Garrett Fields from SUNY Canton won the Society’s Central New York Chapter King-Traugott Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year in the amount of $3,000.
    • ·         Thomas Guilfoil from SUNY Canton won the Society’s Gordon V. R. Holness Engineering Technology Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year in the amount of $5,000.
    • ·         William Walter, Chapter Historian (retired from Carrier), will be honored with the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award at the Society’s Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Figure 4. Bill installed me as Chapter President last summer.

The Chapter board of governors also recently voted to sponsor (Bronze Sponsorship) New York State Green Building Conference organized by SUNY ESF. Meanwhile, our sponsored Senior Project at Syracuse University has been going well, our Chapter expect a short presentation from them in one of our future meetings. Our Chapter also has been working closely with ESF students to establish the ASHRAE ESF Student Branch right on SUNY ESF campus; our Chapter Student Activities co-chair Michael Miller will be serving as the mentor to ESF students and as a liaison to our Chapter. It’s our hope to encourage more local students to join and contribute to our industry.

Figure 5. CNY Chapter will sponsor NYS Green Building Conference.

Figure 6. CNY Chapter works with ESF students to establish the ESF Student Branch.

Finally, our Chapter Sustainability Project at the Oswego County Opportunities’ Transitional Living Home om Fulton has been going really well in the past couple of months. The new high efficiency furnace was started and the old steam boiler system was demolished. We expect it to be complete this summer. Please refer to Charlie’s article for updated progress on this significant initiative our Chapter has taken.

We only have three meetings left this ASHRE 2018-19 year, I sincerely hope to see you in our future meetings!

    Sincerely,

    CL

    President’s Message

Hope you all had a very pleasant holiday season!

On November 12th, the CNY Engineering Expo Committee had another successful year hosting the 15th Annual CNY Engineering Expo at Oncenter, Syracuse. More than 500 professionals from all over the State participated in the daylong 7-PDH conference. Among of the sponsoring technical societies, ASHRAE hosted the Mechanical/HVAC/Energy session for the 4th consecutive year. We invited T. David Underwood, ASHRAE society pas president, who provided valuable insights on smart grid and commissioning. I, Charles Bertuch, and the other two speakers also presented on ASHRAE standards, energy storage, building envelope, and mechanical engineering failures. I thank you for those who came and I welcome to more diverse topics on Mechanical/HVAC/Energy next year.

Right after the CNY Expo, our Chapter hosted a small-scale trade show and happy hours at Dinosaur BBQ. Thanks to our sponsors (EBS, RL Stone, RF Peck, and Liberty Electric) who made the trade show and happy houravailable!

Figure 1. 15th CNY Engineering Expo Mech/HVAC/Energy session

In December, we had Shaz Syed from Bosch present on boiler design basics. It was a YEA night, we had about 8 students from SU and SUNY ESF come, and those SU students who participated in the ASHRAE sponsored senior project also briefly presented their progress. Thanks to our open-bar sponsor from H&V, it was a good meeting to wrap up 2018. I also presented ASHRAE’s updated cores values, including Excellence, Commitment, Integrity, Collaboration, Volunteerism, and Diversity.

Both our sponsored SU Senior Project and Sustainability Project with Oswego County Opportunities are progressing well, thanks for the BoG members who are leading the efforts. Please refer to their update articles in the newsletter.

On December 10th, I also had the pleasure to visit Rochester Chapter as Regional Vice Chair for YEA and presented a topic on sustainability and resiliency. I learned several things from our well-run neighboring chapter.

Figure 2. Visit Rochester Chapter in their December meeting

As we are planning our annual Clambake first time at the Spinning Wheel, we welcome all of you to reserve the date on Thursday June 13th. I hope to see you at this new venue! Refer to the following article and attached flyer for details.

Our next meeting – the first meeting in 2019 – is a free meeting sponsored by Carrier. I hope to see you at the Dinosaur BBQ on January 9th!

A lot of things happened with our Chapter in the past two months!

First, we started off our 2018-19 ASHRAE year with the Empire Brewery tour in Cazenovia. The weather was perfect, we had about 30 people came to the recently constructed brewery in Cazenovia. The facility manager introduced the company history to us and toured us through the whole brewing process. We also finished the Chapter Officers’ installation for this year. Thanks to our beverage sponsor Daikin, everyone got a chance to taste some fresh locally brewed beer. And followed by a fierce foosball competition!

In late September, the 7th International Building Physics Conference was held in recently renovated Marriott Syracuse Downtown. Our chapter proudly sponsored the event! Presenting our Chapter, I attended the conference and served as a judge for students’ poster competition. I am amazed to see so many people from all parts of the world – 33 countries represented – coming to Syracuse to discuss healthy, intelligent and resilient buildings and urban environments!

We were excited to host our October meeting – a student activities’ night – right on SUNY ESF campus! Joshua and Peter from SUNY ESF facilities provided the PDH accredited tour at the Gateway Center. We had a great turnout – almost 50 people, among who many SU and ESF students joined us. I assigned the chapter board members the task

to speak and get to know at least one student; I believe many students not only learned about the high efficiency CHP systems, but also learned something about ASHRAE and career advice from local professionals. I emphasized that our Chapter will keep all our monthly programs free to students – so bring your friends and come to our meetings to learn something about HVAC&R indus-

    tries.

In October, I also had the pleasure to visit Niagara Frontier Chapter as a Regional Vice Chair for YEA and presented a topic on sustainability and resiliency in their main program. Many industry people showed up for the lunch meeting, and I got a chance to meet some local YEA members as well as local Chapter board members.

The 4th annual CNY Steamboat Challenge was held at the MOST on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Students built a boat out of recycled materials and a homemade metallic engine that produces steam to propel the boat when heated by a tea light candle. Teams of between one and four students in grades four through 12 raced their boats on 3 inches of water along 10-foot-long inflatable tracks. The competition is divided into three levels: Division I (grades 4-6), Division II (grades 7-8) and Division III (grades 9-12).

Please join me to congratulate our 2018 CNY Steamboat Challenge winners:

    Division I

First place: Dragon Boat (no school)

Second place: Chen Boy of Eagle Hill Middle School

Third place: Lab Rats of Syracuse Academy of Science

    Division II

First place: The Ravens of Syracuse Academy of Science

Second place: Overtaker of Syracuse Academy of Science

Third place: Oofer Boat Sailors of Jamesville-Dewitt Middle School

    Division III

First place: Team Supreme of Faith Heritage

Second place: Pegasus of Syracuse Academy of Science

Third place: Usain Boat of Syracuse Academy of Science

By now you may have already heard about the closing of Hinerwadels where we held many of our annual ASHRAE Clambakes for the past 78 years. Our Chapter is committed to continue bringing almost 1000 people in local HVAC&R industries together once a year – we will plan our 2019 ASHRAE Clambake at Spinning Wheel in North Syracuse.

Last but not least, please join us at the 2018 CNY Engineering Expo at Oncenter on Monday, November 12. ASHRAE CNY Chapter will sponsor the Mech/HVAC/Energy track. Also please join us for appetizers and drinks right after the Expo at Dinosaur BBQ – thanks to our sponsors from RF Peck and Liberty Electric, they are free. Hope to catch up with you there!

    Sincerely,

    CL

Hope you and your family had a great summer this year! Beginning 2018-19 ASHRAE year, our chapter will start off our chapter program with the Empire Brewery tour in Cazenovia, followed with dinner at the brewery.

This summer, our Chapter had our 78th annual ASHRAE Clambake at Hinerwadel’s, which brought about 1,000 local professionals in our industry together every year. Thanks to those volunteers and sponsors to continue make our very own ASHRAE Clambake a success this year!

We also had our 20th annual golf tournament at Foxfire, the weather was good and we had 20 teams. Thanks to the volunteers and sponsors as well!

The 2018 ASHRE Region I Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) was held August 16 – 18 in Jersey City, NY. Seven of our chapter members attended the conference, Richard and I presented at the business meetings as Delegate and Alternate. Congratulations to the following six of our Chapter members who were recognized with awards at the CRC!

    • Steve Sill Most Improved Chapter Performance - Honorable Mention

    • Brendan Hall GGAC Outstanding Chapter Performance - Honorable Mention

    • Matt Clark YEA Outstanding Chapter Performance Award

    • Steven Sill Websitation of Excellence Award

    • John McBlane CTT Sustainability Award

    • Rick D'Ambrosia Student Activities RVC “Top Dog” Award

Sheila J. Hayter, P.E., is ASHRAE’s President for the 2018-2019 term. She is an ASHRAE Fellow and a Distinguished Lecturer. Her theme for the Society year is “Building Our New Energy Future.” From my interaction with Sheila and other ASHRAE members, her dedication to ASHRAE and being one of the only a couple of ASHRAE female presidents has encouraged many members, especially those women engineers in our industry.

Finally, it’s an honor to serve as CNY Chapter President for 2018-2019 term for our about 250 local ASHRAE members. One of my messages as a Regional Vice Chair is “you belong here”, I cordially welcome all local professionals and students to our Chapter meetings – you contribute to our industry and share our mission, to advance the arts and sciences of HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world, you belong here. See you at the brewery in September!

    Sincerely,
