Saint Joseph’s Hospital is a 450 bed regional Hospital serving central New York. Recently completed are 17 new state-of-the-art operating rooms and 110 private patient rooms with support services bringing the campus to nearly a million square feet. With a NYSERDA grant of $2,000,000 the Hospital was also able to recently complete a 4.4 megawatt Co-Generation (or CHP) plant to reduce utility cost and provide redundant power for the facility.
One of the key considerations in the expansion was keeping with the hospital’s intent on green and sustainable development and energy conservation. CHP, which generates both electricity and thermal energy for steam and hot water from a single fuel source, fit the needs of the hospital and provided additional benefits as well. The adoption of CHP allowed St. Joseph’s to generate their own power, reducing demand from the electric grid and improving reliability, lower costs, and substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The St. Joseph’s tour will show the integration of the CHP with the existing facility.
